Three things to know before your first pregnancy ultrasound

Your first ultrasound is a very special occasion. Not only do you get the chance to see your baby’s heartbeat and movements, but we will also be able to give you a printed or digital photo of your baby to take home with you and cherish!
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now recommend at least one ultrasound during your pregnancy, typically between 18-22 weeks. Most healthy pregnancies involve around two scans: an early one to date the pregnancy, and one in the second trimester for a more detailed analysis of the baby’s anatomy.
If you’re having one for the first time, we know you might be nervous! To put your mind at risk, here are three things to know before you visit a studio for your first pregnancy ultrasound.
What is the ultrasound scan for?
Throughout your pregnancy, there are a number of ultrasounds we can do, all for different reasons.
A scan around 8-14 weeks into the pregnancy will help to confirm your due data and an initial check on the baby’s heartbeat. Between 18-22 weeks, an additional scan means we can check on your baby’s organs, growth and placenta.
Some mothers also choose to have a late pregnancy scan after 30 weeks. This will look at your baby’s size, position and amniotic fluid. You’re not limited to just 1 or 2 scans, however: we welcome you back to our studio to see your baby as much as you like!
How should I prepare for my ultrasound?
For any early scans within the first trimester, you usually need a full bladder, so get drinking! Having around 500-750 ml of water an hour before the scan means the uterus will be raised enough that your baby will be clearly visible.
No special preparations should be needed for any later scans, unless we or any medical practitioner tells you otherwise. You should be able to eat and drink normally in most cases.
Feel free to wear comfortable clothing that can be easily lifted above your belly during your time in the studio. This is because it helps us with the scan and you to feel more relaxed as we do it.
What can I expect during my ultrasound?
For a first trimester scan, it will typically take around 15 minutes. We will move a probe over your belly with warm gel, and talk you through what we’re seeing. This is when you’ll get the chance to meet your baby and feel his or her heartbeat!
Occasionally, our scan might not get a clear image… but that’s nothing to worry about! It may be due to the baby’s position or movements, and it’s completely normal. In these situations, we’d just ask you to come back for another scan in the future.
