How Can You Tell if a Baby Is a Boy or a Girl on an Ultrasound?

There's something incredibly exciting about reaching the point in your pregnancy where you could find out whether you're expecting a little boy or a little girl.

For some parents, it's the day they've been counting down to since they first saw those two pink lines. Others spend weeks debating whether to find out at all, wondering if they should wait until birth for the surprise. And then there are the families who already have the balloons, cake, or confetti cannons ready to go, they just need one answer before they can start celebrating.

No matter where you fall, you're probably wondering the same thing:

How Does an Ultrasound Determine a Baby's Gender?

An ultrasound doesn't determine gender through DNA or blood-work. Instead, it allows the sonographer to see your baby's developing anatomy using sound waves that create detailed images inside the womb.

By the second trimester, boys and girls have developed physical differences that can usually be identified during a scan.

If you're expecting a boy, the sonographer will be looking for the penis and scrotum. If you're expecting a girl, they'll look for three bright white lines, often nicknamed the "three lines sign," which represent the labia.

To someone without training, those tiny details can sometimes be almost impossible to spot. That's why so many parents find themselves staring at the screen thinking, "I still don't see it." Fortunately, your sonographer knows exactly which angles to look for and can explain what you're seeing as the appointment unfolds.

Sometimes the answer becomes obvious almost immediately. Other times, your baby has other plans.

When Can You Find Out?

One of the biggest misconceptions about gender ultrasounds is that there's a magic week when every baby will happily reveal whether they're a boy or a girl. In reality, every pregnancy develops a little differently.

At Baby Smiles, we are usually able to identify gender as early as 13-17 weeks, but at that stage, babies are still very small and their anatomy is continuing to develop.

What If My Baby Won't Cooperate?

Ask almost any sonographer, and they'll tell you they've met plenty of stubborn babies.

Some spend the entire appointment curled into a tiny ball. Others cross their legs, tuck their feet underneath them, or decide the placenta makes an excellent pillow. Every now and then, you'll have a baby who's happily stretching, rolling around, and giving everyone the perfect view.

There's no way to predict which kind of appointment you'll have.

If your baby isn't cooperating right away, don't panic. It's incredibly common, and it doesn't mean anything is wrong. Your sonographer may ask you to roll onto your side, stand up for a few minutes, take a short walk, or simply wait to see if your little one decides to move on their own.

Sometimes all it takes is a little patience.

Can an Ultrasound Ever Be Wrong?

Pregnancy is full of advice, traditions, and family stories. Chances are someone has already told you that carrying high means you're having a girl, or that craving salty foods must mean it's a boy.

They're fun to talk about, but they aren't reliable ways to predict your baby's gender.

Some of the most common myths include:

  • A faster heartbeat means you're having a girl.

  • Carrying low means you're having a boy.

  • Morning sickness is worse with girls.

  • Sweet cravings mean girl, salty cravings mean boy.

The truth is, every pregnancy is different. Plenty of parents who experienced every "girl" symptom imaginable have gone on to welcome baby boys, and vice versa.

If you're hoping for a dependable answer before birth, an ultrasound performed at the right stage of pregnancy remains one of the most exciting and accurate ways to find out.
